Completely Uninstall/Remove AVG Secure Search from your computer and browsers

AVG Secure Search when installing changes default search provider, browsers homepage, installs AVG Security toolbar for IE and Firefox. AVG has left the user in a situation where he doesn’t know how to remove AVG Secure Search from Chrome, IE and Firefox browsers, let’s take a look at how to remove it from these browsers.

Today we cover AVG’s newly introduced service, AVG Secure Search which was launched by discontinuing the LinkScanner service, now the cleanup job if you installed this standalone product on your computer, you can’t find the option to uninstall it under Programs and features in Windows 7 or in Add/Remove Programs in XP, you will only find AVG Security Toolbar, which can be uninstalled easily.

To update: Use AVG Browser Configuration Tool to remove AVG Secure Search, AVG Toolbar and also restores default browser settings.

Removing AVG Secure Search from Firefox, Chrome and Internet Explorer

I. for Firefox

1. If it is not already disabled, open the Firefox Add-ons Manager>Extensions, select “AVG Security Toolbar” and click on disable button.

2. We noticed that searches done in the search bar still yield results using Google, but searches done in the awesome bar open search results using AVG Secure Search, which can be annoying, continue reading below for the fix

If you are seeing AVG Secure Search as the default search engine in Firefox’s search bar, click the arrow button next to it and select Manage Search Engines > select AVG Secure Search and remove it and set another search engine you want default.

3. Now type about:config in the address bar and look for the preferences below one by one, right click and select reset button for each.

  • browser.search.defaultenginename
  • browser.search.searchEnginesURL
  • keyword.URL

If the reset option is grayed out for the selected preference, you don’t need to do anything as you are already using the default search engine other than AVG to search the search bar.

For Internet Explorer

1. Tools>Manage Add-ons, select AVG Security Toolbar and disable it.

2. Select Search Providers in the Manager add-ons window, in the right pane you can see (AVG safe search listed as default search engine here along with Google and Bing) right click on the desired search engine and click set as default.

Now right click on AVG Secure search and select ‘suggestions disabled’ button and then click ‘remove’ button, restart IE for the changes to take effect.

III. for chrome

From the hot dog icon, select Settings > scroll down to the search section, choose your search engine.

Now go to Extensions page Tools>Extensions> remove AVG Secure Search extension.

You also need to reset the homepage in Firefox, Chrome and Internet Explorer browsers to the default homepage.
