Firefox finally gets guide audio indicators and mute feature, now available in Nightly for testing

Firefox users can rejoice now, Mozilla has added guide audio indicators and muting feature to Nightly, and the feature has been targeted for Firefox 42, which is due for release on November 3, 2015.

When you have a lot of tabs open in the browser, it’s hard to find that tab making noise, not in the Mozilla browser anymore. Firefox now shows audio indicators for tabs that are playing music and lets you mute them with one click. Muting and unmuting can be done quickly.

In the screenshot below, you can notice two tabs open in Firefox, while the soundcloud tab is playing audio and the other YouTube tab is muted.

Audio indicators work with HTML5 audio and video and web audio and also with the latest beta version of flash 19.0.0.124.

Chrome still doesn’t have tab mute feature

Google Chrome 32 has this feature on January 14th last year. Current Chrome 44 does not yet allow you to mute a tab, but it is available behind an ‘Enable Tab Audio Muting UI Control’ flag.

We don’t know when Google adds the mute tab feature to the browser. Until then, you can mute the audio playback guide by enabling this flag.
