Google Chrome background pages and apps, how to close them?

Google Chrome allows extensions and apps hosted on the Chrome Web Store to use background pages to display timely notifications, for example, Google Email Scanner extension uses background pages to display the number of unread messages in your Gmail inbox. These background pages are invisible as they constantly run in the background.

Background apps

Some apps keep running even after you close Chrome, they are called background apps for eg Google Music Player Preview recently covered. If background apps are installed for Chrome, you can see a Chrome icon in your system tray that lists the background apps running when you right-click on it.

Managing apps and pages in the background

These background pages and apps can also consume system resources, so Chrome allows users to manage them. If any extension or application using the Wrench menu background pages is displayed see background pages item, clicking on it opens the task manager highlighting apps and extensions with running background pages.

Task Manager displays memory and CPU usage for these apps, you can select any background app and click the button End of process button or you can select Exit in the tools menu to close Chrome completely when background apps are running.

You can also disable or uninstall extensions. To disable all apps running in the background after closing Chrome, you need to open Options > Under the hood uncheck to keep running apps in the background when Google Chrome is closed.
