How to Disable Panel Based Download Manager in Firefox 20

The first beta version of Firefox 20 has been released and is available for download, replacing the old download manager interface with the dashboard-based download manager and has been enabled by default. If you downloaded the beta and you don’t like the new download manager/Downloads Panel UI and its icon, you can easily disable it and revert back to the old downloads UI, here’s how.

Mozilla has been offering the new Downloads Panel for almost eight months on the nightly/aurora/beta channel (not enabled by default). The current Download Manager in the stable version shows the progress of downloads in a separate pop-up window, where the new built-in Firefox browser window shows the download progress in a panel with its icon in the navigation toolbar.

Annoyance with dashboard-based download manager and temporary fix for it

The download icon that appears on the far right of the toolbar shows the download progress by stealing focus when you work in other tabs and you can hide this icon by dragging and dropping in the customization toolbar window. You can still see the progress of downloads by pressing ctrl+J button that opens the library window.

Permanently/completely disable the Downloads Panel in Firefox and get the old separate window for downloads back

1. Visit about:config

2. Turn the preference browser.download.useToolkitUI value for real.

3. Restart the browser for the changes to take effect.

4. Now the Downloads Panel has been disabled and new downloads started from now on will appear in a separate window. However, the Downloads icon still appears on the toolbar, so drag and drop it onto the toolbar layout window to hide it.
